William H. Maples, Jr., 86, of Rockingham, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011, at his home. Mr. Maples was born September 8, 1924 in Richmond County, a son of the late William H. and Dora McCumbee Maples. He was a member of West Rockingham United Methodist Church where he was a member of the choir for many years. He was a retired saleman with Wick Corporation and for over 30 years sang with the Carolina Quartet. His grandson, John William Webb, brothers, Hubert and Welford Maples and sister, Peggy Daniels, all preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Betty Covington Maples of the home; son, William H. “ Bill” Maples, III and wife Janice of Rockingham; daughters, Martha Webb and husband John of Rockingham, Melinda Floyd of Rockingham, Amanda Harrill and husband Glenn, of Beach Lake, PA; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dwight Maples of Camden, SC, and a special friend Richard Harris. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday at West Rockingham United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Dawkins officiating. Interment will follow in Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will see friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Tuesday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at the home.
