Thomas George “Tom” Wilson, 84, of Hamlet, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Kingswood Nursing Center in Aberdeen. Tom was born September 18, 1926 in Richmond County, a son of the late George Thomas and Nayrilla Dunn Wilson. He had served his country in the US Navy during World War II, was a member of Roberdel Baptist Church , loved fishing and was an avid farmer. Tom was instrumental in bringing the Lowes store to Rockingham, where he retired as store manager. He also worked with the North Carolina Department of Corrections at Cameron Morrison Correctional Facility and taught textiles at Richmond Senior High School. Tom was also well known for selling his produce out of his truck at Captain Larry’s on Hwy 74. Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Darthy “Lucille” Maree Wilson; a grandson, Jeffrey Barber; brothers and sisters, Johnsie Russo, Georgia White, Judy Wilson, Kerney Wilson and Mitchell Wilson. Surviving are his son Jimmy Wilson and wife Linda of Kannapolis; daughters, Brenda Hefner and husband Robert of Hickory, Roxanne Beck and husband Eddie of Rockingham,; grandchildren, Dan Barber, Jr., Robert Beck, Jr., Robert Wilson, Jimmy Wilson, Jr., Jeremy Wilson, Amy Weaks and Jason Kuhlmann; ten great grandchildren; brother Levon Wilson and wife Vera of Hamlet; and sisters, Della Sue Denson and husband Carl of Rockingham, Jewel McRae of Hamlet, and Joann Byers and husband Phil of Ashland, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Roberdel Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park. The family will see friends from 2:30 – 3:45 pm Sunday at the church and at other times at the Beck home, 176 Sam Richardson Road, Rockingham. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Roberdel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1118 Richmond Road, Rockingham, NC 28379.
