Mrs. Martha McPherson Childers, 85, of 118 Central Avenue, Rockingham died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Hospice Haven in Rockingham. She was born February 17, 1922 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late Josie K. Stanley and Arthur H. McPherson. Mrs. Childers was retired as a sales clerk at the Diamond Mart in Rockingham with many years of service. Prior to this, she was Merchandise Manager/Buyer and Wedding Director at Gaddy’s Clothing Department Store of Rockingham. Mrs. Childers was a member of East Rockingham First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she ministered and taught Sunday school. She attended Emmanuel Bible College in Franklin Springs, GA, graduating in 1939. While there, she was a member of a traveling quartet. Surviving are two daughters, Diane Leviner and Kay Oliver, both of Rockingham; a son, Bob Childers of Winston Salem; a brother, John Harrison McPherson of Pinehurst; four grandchildren, Robert Wayne Oliver and wife Betty Jo, and Caron Joye Oliver, all of Rockingham, Rebecca Kay Leviner of Anderson, SC and Andrew Childers of New York City; one great grandson, Hunter Oliver of Boone, and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Luke Childers in May 2004, and four brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Funeral service will be conducted 3:00 pm Thursday, June 21st in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham with Rev. Doug Amos officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:45 to 2:45 pm prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at Kay Oliver’s home at 126 Pinebark Trail, Rockingham. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Richmond County, 1119 N. Hwy 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.
