Bettie Ann Horton Futrell, 82, of Ellerbe, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2011 at her home. Mrs. Futrell was born January 29, 1929 in Pittsburg, PA, a daughter of the late Jack R. and Vera Estelle McNure Horton. She was member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Ellerbe where she had been a member of the choir and had served as choir director and pianist for various churches in Richmond County. She was a music educator, having taught at Ellerbe High School, South Lenior High School, Smyrna High School, Rockingham High School, B.F. Graddy School, and later retired from Richmond County Schools while working at Ellerbe and Hamlet Junior High Schools. She was a member of the Richmond County Public Library Board, Retired Teachers Association, past president of the Music Educators of North Carolina, an active worker for Relay for Life, former director of the eight-o’clockers choral group at Rockingham High School and taught private piano and voice lessons for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilton Ray Futrell. Surviving are her children, Vera Wright and husband Curtis of Milton, DE, Ted W. Futrell and wife Sandra of Ellerbe, Stephan R. Futrell of Rockingham, Mark H. Futrell and wife Louise of Southern Pines and Christie Ann Futrell of Ellerbe; grandchildren, Jesse R. Futrell, Wessley C. Futrell, Shannon I. Futrell, Annie C. Futrell; and a great granddaughter, Eveie Ann Futrell. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Kevin Thompson and Rev. James Watson officiating. Interment will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery. The family will see friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Saturday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the home.
