Clara Edwards Batton

Clara Edwards Batton, 90 of 262 Church Street Rockingham went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday January 29, 2012. Born August 24, 1921 in Robeson County, NC a daughter of the late William Henry “W.H.” and Gussie Stankwytch Edwards. She was one of the oldest charter members of Shining Light Free Will Baptist Church where she enjoyed serving as pianist, Sunday school teacher and President of the Ladies Auxiliary. She retired from Beaunit in 1966 after 23 years of service. Funeral services will be conducted 3PM Monday at Shining Light Free Will Baptist Church. Rev. Howard T. Smith and Rev. Joe Wilkes will officiate. Burial will follow in Richmond Memorial Park. Surviving is a daughter Bobbie B. Sasser of Rockingham, a sister-in-law Mrs. Lucille Edwards of Rockingham, three grandchildren; Rhonda Gibson and husband John of Hartsville, SC, Richard A. Underwood and wife Tina of Rockingham and Barbara S. Wiles of Greenville, SC. Also surviving are 6 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a special son-in-law Rev. Ralph Sasser. The family will receive friends 3-5 pm Sunday afternoon at Carter Funeral Home and other times at the home of Bobbie Sasser 321 Richmond Road, Rockingham, NC.
