Edna Mae Norton Spivey, 84 of Ellerbe, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the Hermitage Retirement Center in Rockingham. Mrs. Spivey was born July 5, 1927 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late Henry Lee and Mattie Frances Smith Norton. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Ellerbe, where she had been active with the Women of the Church and Vacation Bible School and had retired from Commonwealth Hosiery in Ellerbe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Spivey; a son, Larry Spivey; sisters, Catherine Quick, Esther Fillimon, Bernice Boyle; and brothers, Hubert and Ernest Norton. Surviving are sons, Ronnie Spivey and wife Patricia of Rockingham, Andy and wife Willa Spivey of Ellerbe, Marc Spivey of Ellerbe; daughters, Sandra Richardson and husband Donnie of Ellerbe, Robin Gentry and husband Alton of Laurinburg; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Mathis of Cheraw, SC; a special sister-in-law, Mary Helen Spivey Capps Stewart and husband Charlie of Ellerbe; and a brother-in-law, Guy Spivey and wife Yvonne of St. Simon Island, GA. Funeral services will be held at 11am Wednesday at Mt Pleasant United Methodist Church with Rev. Elizabeth Polk officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will see friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the Richardson home, 864 Grassy Island Road, Ellerbe. Memorials may be made to Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N. US Hwy 1, Rockingham, NC 28379. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Teri Cowan for her compassion and care, as well as the staff of Richmond County Hospice, during Mrs. Spivey’s illness.
