George Moore Rankin, 86, of 2024 Brookbank Road Rockingham died Monday March 12, 2012 in First Health Moore Regional Hospital. Born February 20, 1926 in Richmond County a son of the late Robert Moore and Frankie Thompson Rankin. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Patsy Rankin Covington, brothers; Dolph and Bob Rankin, sisters; Ellen Nelson, Ollie Snyder, Edna Robbins, and Margie McInnis. George enjoyed working and staying busy, he began his working life as a farmer, then he spent 40 years as a local salesman for Southern and Sunbeam Bread Companies. After retirement he worked nine and a half years with Winn-Dixie and another seven years for O’Tuels convenience store. A passionate fan of Raider Football, George could be spotted on the top row of (every) home and away game since 1973. He also enjoyed his Tarheels, hunting and gardening. He was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, during his 61 year membership he served in many different capacities. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII and attended Brevard College. The highlight of his last year was being part of the WWII Honor Flight to Washington, DC. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Gardner Rankin of the home, a daughter Libby R. Boyce of Humble, TX., a brother Mack Rankin of Montgomery, Al., a sister Jacqueline Elam of Charlotte, NC., two granddaughters; Paige Boyce Mayhew and husband Scott of Texas and Kristin Rankin Boyce also of Texas. Also surviving is a great grandson, Cole Jeffrey Mayhew, as well as several nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 P.M., Saturday March 17, 2012 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Brian Blackwell. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Eastside Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services, at the church.
