Mrs. Emma Chavis Thomas, 79, of Rockingham died Thursday, September 20, 2007 at Carolina Medical Center , after a brief illness. Emma was born in Richmond County on August 15, 19 28 , a daughter of the late Neal and Laura Ezzell Chavis. She was an active member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and retired from Sara Lee Hosiery with 32 years of service. She was preceded in death by her son Randall Thomas on September 12, 1995 . Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Ray Thomas of the home; a daughter, Gwen Scott and husband, Bill of Rockingham; a grandson, Rayme Mudd and special friend, Julia Jordan of Rockingham; two special nieces, Virgie Clark and husband, Larry, of Ellerbe; Louise Caulder and husband, Earl of Denton; two step-grandchildren, William Scott and wife, Leslie, of Greenville, SC; Christine Scott and husband, Ray of Marion, SC; two step great-grandchildren, Mary Marlowe and Emily Raylin Scott of Greenville, SC; a sister, Julia Deaton of Sanford; and many other nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and other times at the home of Gwen and Bill Scott. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 23, at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Corey Wilson and Rev. Wayne Tuttle officiating.
