James Walter Hughes Jr., better known as Jimmy or “Half-way”, passed away peacefully at home on June 19th 2012 at the age of 80. Jimmy was born August 26th 1931 in Rockingham, NC, to James Walter Hughes Sr. and Georgia Spivey Hughes. Jimmy was a Navy Veteran and served in the Korean War. A proud Tin-Can Sailor that sailed around the world three times, on all the seven seas. Petty Officer Hughes was a gifted story teller and shared many fond memories and stories about; the day he was born in a old mill home on Pee Dee, his first job as a sawdust stacker at the sawmill in the Okefanokee swap, all the romances with mermaids during his Naval adventures, to the time he lost his leg on a fishin trip at Ledbetter lake. Jimmy is survived by his devoted loving wife Peggy Ann Horne Hughes of Rockingham; Daughters, Joy Norton of McColl, SC, Cathy Allen of Rockingham NC, Cindy Todd and husband Ronald of Ozark, MO; Son, Jamie Hughes and wife Julie of Stanfield, NC, Granddaughters Angie Roper, Jill Veach and husband Michael, Tiffanie Worrell, and Chantal Hughes, grandson Steven James, 3 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild. Brother-in-law, Ken Benoist and wife Ruby of Rockingham, NC. Sister-in law, Doris White of Hamlet, NC. Sister-in law, Mary Jean Hughes, of Smyrna, GA; brother in law Floyd Horne and wife Thelma of Roanoke Rapids NC; His most beloved and trusted friend Tommy Williams and wife Gita of Rockingham, NC; his loyal little furry friend Sam of the home; and many other cousins, nephews, and nieces. He was preceded in death by parents James Walter Hughes Sr. and wife Georgia Spivey Hughes, son James “Bubba” Walter Hughes III, daughter Jean Carol Hughes, brother Fredrick “Buddy” Hughes, Funeral service will be conducted with military honors at 10:00 AM Friday June 22, 2012 at Richmond Memorial Park in Rockingham, Pastor David Shankel will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p. m.
