Mrs. Iris Vernel (Nealie) Shular Smith, 78, of 1024 Haywood Parker Road, Ellerbe, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 . Mrs. Smith was born September 12, 1929 in Guilford County, a daughter of the late John and Emma Dillon Shular. At a young age she was baptized at Rourk Presbyterian Church and from that point until her death was a faithful and devoted member. Nealie met Ralph Cleveland Smith and they were married on April 10, 1952. She was a longtime employee of Commonwealth Hosiery Mill in Ellerbe, having worked in both the Knitting and Sewing departments. Following her retirement, she devoted her life to helping her children and raising her grandchildren. She was sincerely a devoted mother and grandmother. She lost the one true love of her life, Ralph, in March, 1979 and in February 1990 she lost a grandson, Roger Kevin Allred, whom she dearly loved. Her sisters, Lillie Mae Smith, Eva Crisco, Beulah VonCannon and brothers, Joe Shular and Thomas (Tom) Shular also preceded her in death. Surviving are her daughters, Betty Smith West and husband Tommy, Patsy Smith Everett and husband Richard all of Ellerbe, Judy Smith Robinson and husband Larry of Norman, her sons, Arthur Smith of the home, Cecil Smith and wife Debbie of Norman, grandchildren, Ashley Smith Tarlton and fiancé D.J. Gibson, Amanda Iris Smith and friend Ben McLain, Rebekah Robinson and friend Brett Monroe, Hannah Robinson, Courtney Smith Russ and husband Evan, Joshua Cecil Smith, Jamie Smith, Sarah West Kemp and husband John, Sam West and wife Lisa, Terri Fulp, Tabitha Fulp, great grandchildren, Briana, Kelsey and Adena Tarlton, Sydney, Mack and Billy West, Johnathan, and Bradley Kemp. Also surviving are sisters, Ethel Donahueof Rock Hill, SC, Elizabeth ( Lib) Saunders of Troy, and a dear friend Marie Robinson of Candor. A service to celebrate Nealie’s life will be held at 4:00 PM Friday at Rourk Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Stone officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Thursday at Rourk Presbyterian Church and at other times at the West Home, 1044 Haywood Parker Rd., Ellerbe.
