G. Truett Covington, 85, of Ellerbe, went to his Heavenly home Sunday, September 2, 2012, at National Health Care in West Columbia, SC. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Saron Baptist Church,Ellerbe, NC, with Rev. Richard Stanford officiating. Interment ceremonies with the family will be at Chappell Cemetery prior to the memorial service. The family will see friends from 5 PM to 7 PM. Tuesday, September 4 at Carter Funeral Home,Ellerbe NC and at other times at the home. Mr. Covington was born July 19, 1927 in Richmond County, the son of the late Colon and Fannie Foster Bennett Covington. After graduation from Ellerbe High School, he served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired as a rural mail carrier with the US Postal Service after 28 years of service in 1989. Previously he had been a farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Saron Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. In addition he served as a deacon and past chairman of deacons at Saron Baptist Church and also at Roberdel Baptist Church in Rockingham. He is predeceased by his parents, and two sisters, Mary Frances McIntyre and Clementine Graham. Surviving are his wife Helen McFayden Covington; one daughter, Anne Thompson (Johnny) of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kimberly) of Austin, Texas, Jason (Laura) of Columbia, SC, and Ansley (Richard) Westbrook of Lexington, SC. In addition, seven great grandchildren: Anna Grace Thompson, Charles Truett Thompson and Jeffrey Reid Thompson, Jr. of Austin, Texas; Charlotte Rhys Thompson and Catherine Anne Thompson of Columbia, SC; and John Marc “Jack” Westbrook and Caroline Elizabeth Westbrook of Lexington, SC. He is also survived by close family members, Dot (James) Nicholson, George (Katherine) McFayden, Ronald McFayden, Mike McFayden, many loving nieces and nephews and special friends, Harvey and Mary Lou Thomas. Memorials may be made to Saron Baptist Church, P.O. Box 540, Ellerbe, NC 28338 or to the YMCA Youth Endowment Fund, 1420 Sumter Street, Columbia, SC 29201. The family wishes to thank the staff of National Health Care, West Columbia for the tender, loving care provided Mr. Covington during his stay.
