Mr. Robert Fountain McLaurin, 83, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at Palmer Hinson Care Center. He was born July 24, 1924 in McColl, SC, a son of Bernice Fountain McLaurin and Eugene Bertram McLaurin. In Mr. McLaurin’s younger years, the McLaurin family moved from the city of Rockingham to the country of Richmond County. While living in the country he busied himself with many agricultural projects. One of Mr. McLaurin’s favorite projects was growing cedar Christmas trees on his beloved Happy Hill. Many people will remember him happily selling the trees during the Christmas season, as Christmas was his favorite time of year. Mr. McLaurin was employed for many years at McLaurin’s Feed and Fertilizer store and the Rockingham Ice Plant. One of Mr. McLaurin’s greatest contributions to our community was the spark and passion he instilled in his family to provide opportunities to those with disabilities. Funeral services will be conducted graveside 4:00 pm Friday, December 21st in Eastside Cemetery with Rev. Keith Nanney officiating. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Cooper Meacham McLaurin and his nieces Holleigh McLaurin and Mary McLaurin, and nephews, Gene McLaurin and Dan McLaurin, and his faithful caregiver, Geanell Wall. His parents, Bernice and Bert McLaurin, and his brother, Joe Mack McLaurin, precede him in death. Memorials may be made in Mr. McLaurin’s name to McLaurin Vocational Center, 10 N.
