Leander Bateman

Leander “Lee” Bateman, 81, of 136 Clemmer Rd., Rockingham, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham. Mr. Bateman was born September 16, 1926 in Orange County, NC, a son of the late Ernest and Mary Harris Bateman. He was a charter member of Pine Grove Baptist Church where he had served as choir leader and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Bateman served his country in the US Navy on the Destroyer John A. Boles, during World War II. He retired from Burlington Industries, Richmond Plant and had been a member of the Hamlet Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Ethel Shaw Bateman of the home, son, Stephen Bateman and wife Robyn of Anderson, SC, brother, Robert Bateman of Hillsboro, NC, sister, Patricia Williams of Burlington, 3 grandchildren, Brian Bateman, Whitney Bateman and Nicole Stewart and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM Saturday at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Corey Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park with military honors. The family will see friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday at Pine Grove Baptist Church and at other times at the home on Clemmer Road.
