Horace Mitchell Culver ("Mike") died January 3, 2008 in Alexandria, Virginia, after a brave and dignified bout with cancer. He was 65. Mike was born on August 15, 1942 in Rockingham, NC, Horace C. Culver and Georgetta Wilson Culver (now Georgetta Clark). Mike's father was killed in action in World War II in 1944. Mike graduated from Rohanen High School and North Carolina State University. Mike then worked for over thirty years at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, retiring as a Primary Patent Examiner in 1998, after being awarded the Bronze Medal for superior federal service. He enjoyed science, private piloting (especially the Piper Cub), playing the dulcimer, and making memories with his family. Mike is survived by seven sisters—Mavis, Kay, Colleen, Collette, Christine, Sylvia, and Robin, and his mother, a cancer survivor. He also will be missed by countless cousins, nephews, nieces, colleagues, friends, and anyone else who met him—including many in the Rockingham area. Visitation and services will take place Sunday, January 6, at Sweet Haven Church, 424 Midway Road, Rockingham, with burial to follow at Eastside Cemetery. Visitors may pay their respects between 1:00 and 2:45 at the church. Funeral services will begin at 3:00, with the Rev. Mitchell Roller presiding. A good time will be had by all. Donations in his memory may be made to the Richmond County, NC public libraries.
