Richard Junior Ervin, 89, of Rockingham, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at the Carrol S. Robertson Hospice Center in Fayetteville. Mr. Ervin was born October 30, 1923 in Iredell County, NC, a son of the late Thomas Sinclair and Cora Lee Rodgers Ervin. He had served his country in the US Army during World War II in London, England as a medic. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Concord, NC where he had served as a deacon and as church secretary. In Rockingham, he attended First Baptist Church. A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member of the Rockingham Lodge, #495, A.F. & A.M and a member of the Oasis Temple of the Shrine. He was a well-known basket weaver, having represented Richmond County in the World’s Fair in Knoxville, TN in 1982. He retired as a Field Service Supervisor with Sears after 38 years of service. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Ervin; brothers, Lewis, Harry, Preston, Homer, and J.D. Ervin and sisters, Edna Lowery and Helen Sherrill. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Louise Johnston Ervin of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Sharon Ervin of Statesville; daughter, Diana Ervin of Beaufort, SC; grandchildren, Justin Richard Ervin, III of Greensboro, Natalie Williams and husband Todd of Olin, NC; great-grandchildren, Elleigh, Cole and Barrett Williams; sister-in-law, Ruth Ervin of Mooresville, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 am Friday at First Baptist Church of Rockingham with Rev. Dr. Jim Nelson and Rev. David Montgomery officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11 am Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, NC. The family will see friends following the service Friday at First Baptist Church and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Rockingham, 201 N. Randolph St. Rockingham, NC 28379 or to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1791 E. Broad Ave., Rockingham, NC 28379.
