James Thomas Whitaker, 95, of Rockingham, died Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham. Mr. Whitaker was born July 20, 1917 in Richmond County, a son of the late Tommy Whitaker and the late Ada Chappell Whitaker Broomes. He was a member of New Hope Free Will Baptist Church, had served in the US Army in World War II and was a retired brickmason with Snead-Glidewell Construction Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita White Whitaker and a grandson, Daniel Williams. Surviving are daughters, Brenda Therrell and Margaret Williams, both of Rockingham; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Irene Guinn and Louise Holmstead, both of Wallace, SC. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm Sunday at New Hope Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Hudson and Rev. David Parrish officiating. Entombment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will see friends from 6 to 8 pm Saturday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at the home.
