Mr. Charles Onway Barber, 81, of 286 Cartledge Creek Rd., Rockingham died Monday, March 3, 2008 at Sandhills Regional Medical Center. He was born October 17, 1926 in Richmond County, a son of the late Lena Williams Barber and William Richard Barber. Mr. Barber was a member of Community Church, where he was recently recognized for having twenty years teaching Sunday school. He was a chairman of the church board and sang in the choir. Mr. Barber was the retired owner of Barber’s Grading Co. He had worked previously as a mechanic at Aleo Manufacturing and a master mechanic at Sandhurst. Also, he was involved in the start of the Richmond County Ambulance Service in 1971. Mr. Barber served in the U. S. Merchant Marine. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 pm Thursday, March 6th at Community Church with Rev. Robby Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife of sixty years, Margaret Cockman Barber of the home, two sons, Danny Barber of McGee Crossroads and Johnny Barber and wife Kasey of Newburgh, IN; six grandchildren, Danny Barber, Jr., Jeff Barber, Kellie Barber, Margaret Barber, Matt Belvin, and Courtney Belvin; five great grandchildren, Charlie Barber, Ava Barber, Lily Barber, Tyler Barber, and Nick Barber. A sister, Mae Watson, and brothers, R. B. Barber and Pete Barber, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham.
