James William O’Brien, Jr., 85, of 573 Richmond Road Extension died Saturday July 6, 2013 at his home. Born March 4, 1928 in Richmond County. He was a son of the late James William (Bud) O’Brien, Sr. and Elizabeth McPhail O’Brien. He is preceded in death by his wife Mildred Clarke O’Brien, a son, James Harold O’Brien, a sister Dorothy O’Brien Farrell and a brother, Thomas O’Brien. Jim served his country during WWII as a Merchant Marine, and was recruited to serve in the US Army during Korea. He was a Rockingham Fireman for many years. He was an active member of Glenwood United Methodist Church. James and his wife were founding members of the Sandhill Quadrille Square Dance Club. He is survived by a son Thomas Clayton O’Brien of Rockingham, a daughter, Paula O’Brien White of Clemmons, NC, a brother, Harold “Sonny” O’Brien of Greensboro. Also surviving are four grandsons and four great grand children. A service to celebrate the life of James W. O’Brien will be conducted 11:00am Wednesday July 10, 2013 at Roberdel United Methodist Church. Rev. Bob Carpenter and Rev. Joel Perry will officiate. Burial will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:30-8:30 at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham.
