Charles Fernie Adams, 95, of Ellerbe, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at his home. Charlie was born July 21, 1917 in Lancaster County, South Carolina, a son of the late William Fernie “Bud” and Mary Ghent “Til” Adams. He served his country in the United States Navy, where he was stationed at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC and retired from Mack Trucks after 38 years of service. In 1939, he married his best friend, Margaret “Billie” Campbell, who preceded him in death in 1997 after 57 wonderful years of marriage. Following retirement, they moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland here they resided until 1996 when they moved to Ellerbe. He was a member of the American Legion in Salisbury, Maryland, a member and past president of the Ellerbe Lions Club, a member of Ellerbe First United Methodist Church and had attended Ellerbe First Presbyterian Church, PCA. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughters, Hannah Grace and Sarah Jane Poore, son-in-law, Bob Poore, sisters Avis Dunn and Floy Turner and his best friend Chance. Surviving are his daughters, Kay Altimus and husband Jim, Margaret “Sami” Poore, all of Ellerbe, Belinda Jo VanCleaf and husband Tom of Mechanicsville, Maryland; grandchildren, Jacki Sherman (Mike), Jim Altimus (Lois), Traci Bass, Bobbi Greenfield (John), Lori Reynolds (Moose), Jennifer Frye (Joe), Michael Poore, T.J. VanCleaf (Amy) and Chrissy Lake (Korey); eighteen great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his friends from the Ellerbe Senior Center, who were an important part of his life to the end. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3 pm Monday at Ellerbe First Presbyterian Church, PCA with Rev. Stan Layton, Rev. James Watson and Rev. Elizabeth Polk officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery. The family will see friends from 6 to 8 pm Sunday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the home on Page Street.
