Edna Pittman Gerringer, 91, of Rockingham, died on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at Rockingham Manor. She was born July 18, 1916 in Cordova, NC, a daughter of the late Ira and Virginia “Jennie” Hicks Pittman. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Rockingham. A graduate of Rockingham High School, she completed secretarial courses at Wingate College and became a secretary for C.B. Deane, Bill Pittman, and Judge Phillips, whose offices were above the Richmond Theatre on Washington Street in downtown Rockingham. She married Sidney Gerringer in 1940, and together they operated Sidney’s Grill on Fayetteville Road ( a popular meeting place for local civic and service clubs) until the early 1950’s. After a move to Atlanta, Georgia, she became an assistant vice president in the loan office of Southern Federal Savings and Loan, a position she held until her retirement. In 1986 she and Sidney moved back to Rockingham. She was gifted in Spencerian penmanship, beautiful oil painting, and exquisite cooking, A service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, May 4, 2008 in the Colonial Chapel of Carter Funeral Home with Rev. Don Bearfield officiating. Her family will greet friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Private interment will be in Eastside Cemetery. Mrs. Gerringer was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Gerringer; four sisters: Virginia P. Hogan, Gertrude P. Dawkins, Vivian P. Caldwell, and June P. Jones; and twin brothers, James and John Pittman. She is survived by her son, Sidney T. Gerringer, III of Augusta, Ga; two sisters-in-law: Dottie P. Currie and Jane L. Pittman, both of Rockingham; ten nieces and seven nephews. The family representative is her niece, Trudy D. Watkins. Memorials may be made to Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N.
