Mary Margaret Gunter Jay, 82, of 359 McNeill Rd. Rockingham, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham. Mrs. Jay was born April 14, 1926 in Lexington County, SC, a daughter of the late Olin and Gracie Stone Gunter. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hamlet and had been employed at Rohanen School in the cafeteria. She was a known to young people throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia as Mamma Jay, as she worked with the youth at the churches her husband pastored. Surviving are her husband, Rev. David Jay of the home, son, Mickey Jay and wife Dale of Wagram, daughters, Donna Taylor, Phyllis Grant and husband Robert all of Rockingham, a grandson, Scott Shirey and wife Sue of Salisbury, step grandchildren, Kevin Shaw and wife Stephanie of Southern Pines, Glenn Shaw and wife Jayni of Wilmington, Suzaane Mowery of Rock Hill, SC, Valerie Withers of Rockingham, 4 great grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, brother, Leroy Gunter of Johnson, SC, and sisters, Edna Hatcher of Johnson, SC, Lettie Rigsbee of Ft. Pierce, Fl, Willie Mae Giesekins of Lake Wells, Fl. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in the Colonial Chapel of Carter Funeral Home with Rev. David Jay, Rev. Roger Thompson and Rev. Richard Tyson officiating. Interment will follow in Eastside Cemetery. The family will see friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday at Carter Funeral Home and at other times at the Taylor home on McNeill Road. Memorials may be made to Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N.
