William Ray Carroll, 68, of Rockingham, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Ray was born March 16, 1945 in Richmond County, the son of the late William and Josephine Heath Carroll. He was a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church and had retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He enjoyed working with children and was an avid Richmond Raider football fan. He was preceded in death by his wife Mabel Paul Carroll and a son Randy William Carroll. Surviving are his wife, Janis Thompson Carroll of the home; children, Cindy Carroll of Seven Lakes, Holli Dowles Willis (Chris) of Wilmington, Ryan Smith (Maggie) of Rockingham; grandchildren, Charity, Allison and Joshua Robinson, Dusty, Sammi (fiance Alan Henderson Jr.) and Casey Craven, Caroline Smith, Holly and Allison Willis, and Josie and Willa Carroll; great grandchildren, Rider and Ivey Craven; and life-long friend, Odell Shepard of Rockingham. A service to celebrate Ray’s life will be held at 3pm Friday at Beverly Hills Baptist Church with Rev. Mickey Briles officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the New Life Center and at other times at the home.
