Mr. Welford Olin Maples, Sr., 91, of 1309 Ann Street, Rockingham died Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at The Hermitage Retirement Center in Rockingham. He was born November 9, 1916 in Richmond County, a son of the late William H. and Dora McCumbee Maples. Mr. Maples was a lifelong member of West Rockingham United Methodist Church. He was the co-owner of Swink Oil Company, until his retirement. Mr. Maples served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Rockingham Masonic Lodge, American Legion, and 40 and 8 Club. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Thursday, May 15, 2008 at West Rockingham United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Dawkins and Rev. Larry Chandler officiating and Masonic rites to follow. Interment will be in Richmond Memorial Park with military honors. Surviving are two sons, Jim Maples of Rockingham and Wayne Maples of Gastonia; two brothers, William H. Maples, II and Dwight Maples; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Maples was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Maples and a son, Welford Olin Maples, Jr. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to West Rockingham United Methodist Church, 217 Hwy 74 West, Rockingham, NC 28379.
