Mr. J. Harold Dawkins, Sr., 84, of 114 Dawkins Street, Rockingham died Monday, May 19, 2008 at Britthaven of Hamlet. He was born June 9, 1923 in Richmond County, a son of the late Guy and Emma Hussey Dawkins. Mr. Dawkins was the owner of Dawkins Grocery for thirty-two years. He was a life long member of East Rockingham United Methodist Church, where he was a Lay Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Dawkins served in U. S. Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 pm Thursday, May 22nd at East Rockingham United Methodist Church with Rev. Vann Floyd, Rev. William Currie, and Rev. Russell Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond Memorial Park with military honors. Surviving are his wife of sixty two years, Myrtle Bullard Dawkins of the home; two sons, Harold Dawkins, Jr., and wife Cindy of Rockingham and Herb Dawkins and wife Suzanne of Asheville; two grandchildren, Settle Dawkins and wife Jill and Lucinda Bowman and husband Kevin; one great grandson, Logan Bowman; and granddog, Baxter. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and other times at the home.
