Fred Robert Goodwin, Jr., 72, of Rockingham, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Manor Care in Pinehurst. Mr. Goodwin, Jr., was born February 20, 1941 in Anson County, a son of the late Fred Robert and Eva Mudd Goodwin. He had retired from the United States Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. Surviving are his wife, Doris Webb Goodwin of the home; sons, Michael Goodwin and Christopher Goodwin (Angela), all of Rockingham; grandson, Trevor Goodwin; great grandson, Bentley Goodwin; one sister and two brothers. Services will be held privately at a later date. My Dad. From an impoverished and distressed childhood, Dad was compelled to do better for himself. At age seventeen, the Navy offered him a way. He took it and was introduced to a new life of opportunity. A few years passed, then the most wonderful and cherished thing in his life appeared before him, my Mother. I know this because he told me so and expressed it in so many ways. Time passes, I am born, Dad is so proud. But certainly not any less proud when, in a few years, my brother is born. Thus the beginnings of what he loved and protected so much, his family. My Dad is proud of his accomplishments and has every right to be. Dad was always there when I needed him, without hesitation, without doubt, with confident encouragement. What more could I ask for in a Dad? My answer has been, is, and always will be, “nothing more”. I salute my Dad, the lifelong husband to my Mom, the Dad to me and my brother, the papa to my nephew, a patriot for his country, a truly “self-made” man. Dad, no need to sail the sea, but walk over it with Jesus into Heaven and hear our God say, “ well done thy good and faithful servant, well done”. .
