Dorothy Gault Currie, of Rockingham died at her home on June 17, 2008 at 7:55 am surrounded by her family. She was born September 18, 1924 in Marysville, PA, a daughter of the late Edgar and Bertha Gault. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Rockingham. A graduate of Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing in Harrisburg, PA, she earned her cap as registered nurse in 1945. She worked as a nurse at Richmond Memorial Hospital. She married James Hicks Pittman on December 31, 1943, and together they raised five children: Phyllis P. Vereen of Pawleys Island, SC; Patricia P. Hotz (Jim) of Albany, GA; James H. Pittman, Jr. (Beverly) of Wilmington; Anna P. Schenck (Jim) of Raleigh; and Steven Pittman (Denise) of Rockingham. She was a volunteer for Richmond County Hospice and for many years was active with the Red Cross. Dottie was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was active in the church. She was talented in crewel work, candlewicking (French knots), and crochet. She will be fondly remembered for all the baked goods she generously shared with family and friends. She was preceded in death by three husbands, James Pittman, Steve Ward, and Bill Currie; two brothers, George Gault and Carl Gault, and by four sisters, Martha Dibell, Hilda Richeson, Mary Stansfield, and Fran Ritzma. She is survived by her five children, thirteen grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Jane L. Pittman of Rockingham and Babe Gault of Marysville, PA; twenty-one nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Cheryl Holland and the other wonderful caregivers from Sandhills Caretakers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to ALSA for ALS research in memory of Dottie Currie. The address for memorials is The ALS Association, Jim ‘Catfish’ Hunter Chapter, 120-101 Penmarc Dr., Raleigh, NC 27603 with the memo line of the gift indicating “ALS research in memory of Dottie Currie.” The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 am Friday, June 20, 2008 at First Baptist Church in Rockingham with Dr. Lamar King and Rev. Don Bearfield officiating. Music will be provided by Don and Melissa Bearfield. Interment will follow in Eastside Cemetery
