Burgoone Carnes

Mr. Burgoone “B” Carnes, 91, died Friday, February 07, 2014 at Scotia Village in Laurinburg. The family will receive friends from 10 am Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Rockingham. The funeral will follow at 11 am with the Rev. Mike Sykes, the Rev. Allison Farrah and the Rev. Edwin Needham officiating. Entombment with Military Honors will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe at 2:30 pm. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rockingham Masonic Lodge No. 495, which he dearly loved. Born in Lancaster, S.C., Burgoone was the third of eight children born to the late William Aaron “W.A.” Carnes and Kate Belle Tyson Carnes. He graduated from Prospect High School in Monroe and Wingate College and was an alumnus of the University of Miami. Burgoone served in the U.S. Navy, during World War II and retired from CSX Railroad, after 46 years of service as a conductor. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rockingham and was a member of the Rockingham Masonic Lodge No. 495, A.F. & A.M.. “B” served on the Board of the Samaritan Colony, and volunteered at the Soup Kitchen and the Women’s Center for Domestic Abuse. He received the North Carolina Volunteer of the Year award in 1994. “B” was happy go lucky and always enjoyed a good joke with his friends. Surviving is his daughter, Kay Carnes Cauthen and her husband, Hazel of Lancaster, S.C.; two sisters, Jean Lathan and Wanda Needham and her husband, Edwin, all of Pfafftown, NC; and his granddaughter, Laura Roberts. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Pauline Lewis Carnes (2013); and his siblings, Jack, Jim, Gray, Warren and Ernest. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 410 E.
