Alfred Carson “Bill” Lawrence, Jr., 81, of Ellerbe, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at his home. Bill was born November 27, 1932 in Richmond County, a son of the late Alfred Carson and Nellie Pegram Lawrence. He had served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. Bill was an active member of the Ellerbe VFW and was instrumental in the placement of the veterans memorial at Ellerbe Lions Club. He was also a lifetime member and past president of the Ellerbe Lions Club. Bill was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and had retired from Swink Quality Oil Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Currie Johnson Lawrence, and a sister, Juanita L. Quick. Surviving are children, Jeff Johnson and wife Cammy of Ellerbe, Kathy Lawrence of Jackson Springs, Ellen L. Fields and husband Ronnie of Randleman; grandchildren, Candace J. Garner and husband Zach, Haylee Johnson; and a brother, Ed Lawrence of Hamlet. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Monday in the Ellerbe Chapel of Carter Funeral Home with Rev. Elizabeth Polk officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will see friends from 6 to 8 pm Sunday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the home.
