James Odell Benton, 70, of Rockingham, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst. Mr. Benton was born October 14, 1943 in Hoke County, a son of the late John Lanie and Ludie Mae Todd Benton. He had served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War, was a member of Highland Pines Free Will Baptist Church and had retired from Burlington Industries. Surviving are his wife, Janice Harvey Benton of the home; children, James O. “Jimmy” Benton, Jr. and wife Kim of Cordova, Tammy Taylor of Rockingham, Angela Hatley and husband George of Oakboro, Regina Benton of Oakboro, Brian Benton and wife Crystal of Hamlet; brothers, Robert L. Benton and John Larry Benton of Rockingham; sister, Jeanette McKenzie of Rockingham; twelve grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Highland Pines Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Don Kivett and Rev. Darwin Cook officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park. The family will see friends from 6 to 8 Monday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at the home.
