Mrs. Georgia S. Hughes, 96, died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham. She was born March 29, 1912 in Richmond Co., a daughter of the late Robert and Fannie Jones Spivey. Georgia was a dedicated member of Cobb Memorial Baptist Church since 1931. She has been a teacher of the Home Makers Sunday school class. Georgia was a member of the Golden Age Band, Happy Hours Senior Club, VFW Auxillary and participated in Senior Games. She retired from Safie Mill as a textile worker. She was granny Georgia to everyone. She was an inspiration to many people during her lifetime and will be dearly missed. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 pm Sunday, August 3rd at Cobb Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Alex Willoughby and Rev. Frank McQuage officiating. Burial will follow in Richmond Memorial Park. Surviving are her son, Jimmy Hughes and wife Peggy, grandchildren, Cathy Hughes, Joy H. Norton, Jamie Hughes, Jean Hughes, Mike Hughes, Chris Hughes, Sean Hughes, Mary Greene and Martha Queen; fourteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, two great great great grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Garland Kanipe. Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband, James Walter Hughes, Sr., a son, Frederick (Buddy) Hughes; brothers, Earl, Ray, Clyde, and Howard Spivey; a sister, Nora Lee Jackson and a grandson, James (Bubba) Hughes, III. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Cobb Memorial Baptist Church and other times at 312 McArthur Drive in Rockingham. Memorials may be made to Cobb Memorial Baptist Church, 108 Safie Sixth St., Rockingham, NC 28379.
