Julia May (Judy) Swiger Blount died suddenly of a heart condition on August 4, 2008 at her home in Rockingham. Judy was born on October 29, 1929 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, daughter of the late Ernest and Joy Pew Swiger. She was a graduate of Duke Universitiy where she served as president of her sorority, Delta Gamma. During summers of her college years, Judy worked as a camp counselor in Virginia. Shortly after she graduated from Duke University in 1951 she married James Davis Blount Jr. They moved to Rockingham where Jim began his legal career and where their three children were born and reared. Judy was an active member and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Rockingham where she served as a past deacon. Active in her community, she was a past member of the hospital board, President of Friends of the Library, and continued to be an active member of the Leath Foundation, Colonial Dames, and Rockingham Woman’s Club. She was tireless in her devotion to her children and grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Joy Blount Swinnie of Rockingham, James Davis Blount III and wife Courtnae of Cary, North Carolina and Charles Egerton Blount of Raleigh, North Carolina. The surviving grandchildren are Matthew Swinnie and wife Lauren and Julia Blount Swinnie of Rockingham, James Davis Blount IV, Charles Walker Blount and Tyler Joseph Kantor of Cary. Other survivors include a brother Quentin G. Swiger and wife Elinor of Glenview, Illinois and one niece and five nephews, together with four grandnieces and one grandnephew. The family will receive friends at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham on the evening of Wednesday, August 6, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 and other times at her home. The service will be at First Baptist Church of Rockingham on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Lamar King and Rev. William Kearse, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Eastside Cemetery in Rockingham. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Kitchen Fund, 201 North Randolph Street, Rockingham, North Carolina 28379.
