Jerry Mac Snead, 74, of Ellerbe, died Saturday, November 01, 2008 at his home. Jerry was born October 25, 1934 in Norman, NC, a son of the late Barney Lee and Blanche Elizabeth McKoy Snead. Jerry retired from CSX Railroad with 41 years of service. He was a graduate of Candor High School, Class of 1954 and had served his country in the US Army 82nd Airborne Division. He attended Norman United Methodist Church and was a former youth leader at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Hamlet and later at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church in Ellerbe. Jerry was a member of Elberta Lodge No. 654, A.F.& A.M, was a retired volunteer fireman with Mt. Creek Volunteer Fire Department with 42 years of service and had served as a member of the board of directors. He was a former member of the Ellerbe Lions Club, was active in Dixie Youth Baseball in Ellerbe having served as a coach and co-commissioner and an avid supporter of athletics at Ellerbe Jr. High and Richmond Senior High Schools. In addition to his parents, his sisters, Louise Beaman, Audrey S. Shaw, Helen E, Snead, and Jean S. Reynolds, brother, Cecil Snead, father and mother in law, Clayton and Katie Sugg Carriker and a special nephew, Scott Carriker preceded Jerry in death. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Linda Carriker Snead of the home, son, Jerry Mac Snead and wife Bridgett of Ellerbe, daughter, Kathy S. Lomax and husband Doug of Jackson Springs, grandchildren, Coleman Snead, Casey Rhae Snead, Collin Lomax and Conley Lomax, special relative, Sam LeGrande, brothers, Barney Lee Snead, Jr. and wife Oneita, Billy Ray Beaman and wife Sally, all of Rockingham, sister Billie S, Preslar of Hamlet, in-laws, Jerry and Jane Carriker of Ellerbe and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday in the Ellerbe Chapel of Carter Funeral Home. Rev. Edsel Huffstetler, who married Jerry and Linda, and Rev. Bob Carpenter, will officiate. Interment will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery. Former Co-Workers and friends from CSX Railroad will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will greet friends from 1:00 –2:45 PM Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the home in Ellerbe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Creek Volunteer Fire Department, 248 Godfrey Road, Ellerbe, NC 28338; Norman United Methodist Church, P.O.Box 95, Norman, NC 28367 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
