Carleen Gillis Austin, 77, of Rockingham, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Mrs. Austin was born November 1, 1937 in Mecklenburg County, a daughter of the late John W. and Mady Hoard Gillis. She was a longtime member of Cameronian Presbyterian Church, where she had sang with the choir, was a Sunday school teacher, Elder and member of the Women of the Church and was also a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Dale and Johnny Gillis. Surviving are her husband, Bobby Eugene Austin of the home; children, Beth (Randy) Parker of Rockingham, Jonathan Austin of Rockingham, Joy Austin of Rockingham, Andy Austin of Hamlet, Joshua (Laura) Austin of Rockingham; grandchildren, Matthew Parker, Travis Austin and Jaden Austin; brothers, Phillip Gillis of Wilmington, Maxie Gillis of Hamlet, Tommy Gillis of Cheraw, Doug Gillis of Wilmington; and sisters Kay Bolin of Aberdeen and Patsy McCaskill of Rockingham. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at Cameronian Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wyatt Coley officiating. Interment will follow in Northam Cemetery. The family will see friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at Cameronian Presbyterian Church and at other times at the home.
