Mr. Charlie Joyce, 99, of 186 W. Page Street, Ellerbe died Monday, December 1, 2008 at First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham. He was born May 19, 1909 in Stokes County, a son of the late Robert and Katie Sue Hicks Joyce. Mr. Joyce was a member of First Baptist Church in Ellerbe where he served as a Deacon, was on the Ramp Construction and Parsonage Committee. He was a retired tobacco and peach farmer. He was owner of the Feed Mill, which started in 1947. He owned a saw shop that opened in 1982. Mr. Joyce served on the boards of Farmer’s Home Administration, Sandhill Development Board, Farmers Loan Corp, Federal Land Bank, and Farm Bureau. He was a director of Mount Pleasant Community Club. He was a member of Ellerbe Lions Club for over fifty years where he was a past president, Lion of the Year 1965 – 1966, and served on the Scholarship Committee. Mr. Joyce was a member of Woodmen of the World. Funeral service will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at First Baptist Church in Ellerbe with Rev. Dr. James Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery. Surviving are children, Marlene Lowder of Mt. Gilead , Harlan Joyce, Dathia Lee, and Lanelle Baxley, all of Ellerbe; fourteen grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, and sisters, Alma Cook of Kernersville and Mattie Sue Rutledge of Walnut Cove. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leeanna Joyce, second wife, Eva F. Joyce, daughter, Rhoelle Capps, son, Charlie Ray Joyce, siblings, Abe Joyce, Sadie Bowles, Fannie Tuttle, and Nellie Lewis. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5 to 7:30 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe.
