Phillip Douglas Covington, 62, of Hamlet, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at his home. Phillip was born September 9, 1952 in Richmond County, a son of Gladys Marie Hawks Covington Colen and the late Clarence William Covington. Phillip was a graduate of Rockingham High School, Class of 1970 and Appalachian State University. He was an instructor in the GED department of Richmond Community College and was the recipient of the Presidents Award in 2014. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Sammy Covington. Surviving are his mother, Gladys Hawks Colen of Hamlet; brother, Lloyd Covington (Kathy) of Hamlet and a sister, Robyn Mitchell (Oakie) of Gainesville, VA. A service to celebrate Phillip’s life will be held at 2 pm Saturday in the Chapel of Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham with Rev. Leon Hawks officiating. The family will see friends following the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Richmond County/ Anson Community Hospice, 1119 N US Hwy 1 , Rockingham, NC 28379. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the nurses and staff of Richmond County/Anson County Hospice for their caring and compassion during Phillips illness.
