Mary Colon Newton Sasser, 99, of Ellerbe, North Carolina, passed away April 9, 2015 at home. She was born January 30, 1916, in Anson County, a daughter of the late Jabie Graham Newton and Mary Downer Newton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sons, Ralph Sasser and Kenneth Sasser; grandsons, Allen Burley and David Richardson; three sisters, Rosella Burroughs, Phyllis Eddins, and Josephine Edwards; and a brother, J.T. Newton. Mrs. Sasser was an active member and a charter member of the Fellowship Baptist Church and Civitan Club of Ellerbe. She retired at age 65 from Samarkand Juvenile Training School where she was a counselor for 12 years. Prior to that, she worked 11 years at the Ellerbe Hosiery Mill. She volunteered in the elderly free lunch program, transporting citizens to the Nutrition Meal site and delivering meals to homebound senior citizens. She also served as a volunteer at the Rankin Museum. Mrs. Sasser was an inspiration to all those whose lives she touched. Mrs. Sasser is survived by her children; James Sasser and wife Shelia of Charlotte, Judy Sasser Richardson of Ellerbe, Merle Sasser and wife Eomie of Ellerbe, Susan Sasser Burley of Florence, SC, Benjamin Sasser and wife Suk of Florence, SC; daughters-in-law, Bobbie Sasser of Rockingham, Carol Sasser of Charlotte, and Mary Jo Beck of Rockingham; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren. A service to celebrate the life of Mary Sasser will be held at 3pm, Saturday, April 11 at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Reverend Kevin Thompson and Reverend Bill Monroe officiating. Burial will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:45-2:45pm prior to the service and at other times at the home.
