Marie Barbee Spivey

Marie Barbee Spivey, 91, of 162 Wall St. Ellerbe, died Friday, December 26, 2008 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham. Mrs. Spivey was born, October 14, 1917 in Cabarrus County, NC, a daughter of the late Dallas Alexandra and Elvira Owens Barbee. At age 11, she entered the Junior Order Home in Tiffin, Ohio and stayed in the orphanage until she was 18. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, the Adult Women’s Sunday School Class and had retired from Commonwealth Hosiery in Ellerbe after 50 years of service. Her husband, Ross Spivey, and brothers, Dallas and Gene Barbee, preceded her in death. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Kathy Spivey of Wilmington, granddaughters, Donna Weiss of New York, NY, Felicia Phipps Spivey of Wilmington, great granddaughter, Phoebe Ross Weiss, a sister, Helen Miller of Concord, sister in law, Mary Helen Capps and friend Charlie Stewart of Ellerbe. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at Carter Funeral Home, Ellerbe Chapel with Rev. Kevin Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery. The family will see friends from 10:00 – 10:45 AM Monday at the funeral home and at other times at Charlie and Mary Helen’s, 198 E. Church St. Ellerbe.
