Mrs. Ruby Dawkins Norton, 101, of Rockingham, heard her heavenly father call her home on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at her daughter, Althea Brown’s home. Mrs. Norton was born October 30, 1907 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late Henry and Ella Angeline Wilson Dawkins. She was the oldest member of East Rockingham First Pentecostal Holiness Church, which she dearly loved. For years she taught a teenage girls Sunday School class. She was very active in the Women’s Ministry as long as she was able. She had been employed with Safie Mill and later in the lunchroom at Rohanen Elementary School. It was her joy to cook for ministers and their families. Her thin-layer chocolate cakes were always enjoyed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon D. Norton, her son, Vernon L. Norton, her daughter, Daphne N. Walker, her siblings, Nellie Cox, Annie Snead, Blanche Ingle, Nettie Solomon and Koy L. Dawkins, She was cared for by her two loving daughters and their husbands, Frances N. and Doug Amos of Olanta, SC, Althea N. and Bill Brown of Rockingham. Also surviving are a sister Dot Flowers of Camden, SC, grandchildren, Greg Amos and wife Tamara, Terry Brown and wife Deborah, Michael Walker and wife Gina, Robbie Amos and wife Evelyn, David Walker and wife Jean, great-grandchildren, Jennifer Lockey and husband Jason, Seth Amos, Courtney Amos, Whitney Amos, Tyler Brown, Kristen Walker, Arin Walker, Joseph Walker, McKenzie Amos, Ruby Kate Amos, a great-great-grandson, Jarrett Lockey, many special nieces and nephews, her extended family of young people she nurtured and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday at East Rockingham First Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Greg Amos, Rev. Harris Jordan, Rev. Durant Driggers and Rev. Doug Amos officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park. The family will see friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Monday at the church and at other times at the Brown home on Oak Ave. Memorials may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice and Gideons International. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints” Psalm 116:15
