Wilson Eugene “Gene” “Pa” Chappell, 77, of Ellerbe, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at his home. Mr. Chappell was born January 16, 1938 in Richmond County, a son of the late James Wilson and Mary Lucille Wall Chappell. He had served his country in the US Army and was the founding pastor and a member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church. He had worked with Bowles Furniture Company for many years as a salesman and manager. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Elgie Lee Chappell. Surviving are his wife, Janette Whittington Chappell of the home; children, Wilson Eugene “Gene” Chappell, Jr (Ann) of Ellerbe, Darrell Lee Chappell (Judy) of Albemarle, James Reid Chappell (Emily) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Michael Eugene Chappell (Kelly) of Rockingham, Savannah Chappell Honeycutt (Robbie) of Ellerbe; grandchildren, Wilson E. Chappell, III, Kevin Chappell, Kimberly Chappell, Briteny Chappell, Crystal Burr, David Fesperman, Jessica Chappell, Christian Chappell, Preston Honeycutt; 18 great grandchildren, including a special great grandchild, Kyle Chappell; a sister, Carolyn Hussey of Biscoe; and special brothers and sisters in law, Mary Shepard (Odell) of Rockingham, Sue Southard (Jerry) of Partrick, SC, Barbara Funderburk (Robert) of Patrick, SC, Ronnie Whittington (Jean) of Rockingham, Reid Whittington (Linda) of Cheraw, SC, David Whittington (Annette) of Asheboro and Sylvia Chappell of Mt. Gilead. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Sunday at Southside Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Jacobs, Rev. Charles Leviner and Rev. Odell Shepard officiating. Interment will follow in Ma and Pa’s Cemetery on the family farm. The family will see friends from 6 to 8 pm Saturday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the home.
