Rev. Douglas Jennings Stirk, 86, of 121 Hollywood Lane, Rockingham went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Monday, February 9, 2009. He went peacefully, surrounded by his family. Rev. Stirk was born January 13, 1923 in Bennettsville, SC, the son of the late Elton Stirk and Shadie Grant Stirk Davie. Rev. Stirk served in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II. He graduated from Wingate College and Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute, and devoted his life to the ministry. He began his career at the Second Baptist Church of Bennettsville, SC and served as pastor of Roberdel Baptist Church in Rockingham - where he was instrumental in building a portion of the church. He was pastor at Wallace Baptist Church in Wallace, SC and Cobb Memorial Baptist Church in Rockingham. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm Thursday, February 12th at Cordova Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Wood, Rev. Wayne Tuttle, and Rev. Lester English officiating. Interment will follow at Richmond Memorial Park with military honors. Rev. Stirk is survived by his wife, Bennie Sue Mathis Stirk; son, Rev. Michael Douglas Stirk and wife Betty Sowders Stirk of Rockingham; daughters, Dawn Stirk Cockman of Carolina Beach and Lucinda Ann Stirk of Rockingham; grandchildren, Michael Daniel Stirk, Christopher Scott Stirk, Virginia Pittman Cagle and husband Alan, Haylea Cockman Martin and husband Joseph; great grandchildren, Chassidy Rene’ Mixon and Michael Hunter Stirk. Rev. Stirk was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald Ray Stirk; and a sister, Helen Harris. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 8 pm at Cordova Baptist Church and other times at the home.
