Mary Helen Spivey Capps, 91, of Ellerbe, passed away Monday, October 26, 2015 at her home. Mary Helen was born September 13, 1924 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late W.P. and Daisy Williams Spivey. She was a longtime member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, where she had served as an adult Sunday School teacher and the United Methodist Women. She was a member and past president of the Richmond County Democratic Women, Richmond County Business Professional Women, Richmond County Farmers Market and Richmond County Department of Social Service (Chairperson). Mary Helen had been recognized as the Business Professional Women’s Woman of the Year, an Outstanding Senior Citizen by the Ellerbe Jaycee’s and also one of 5 Outstanding Senior Citizens on the state level for that year. For 38 years she worked with Pickett’s Department Store in Ellerbe as store manager and purchaser. She later was Hostess at Ellerbe Springs Inn and Restaurant and Alonzo’s Restaurant. Mary Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Capps, brothers, Ross (Marie), Jasper, Jeff, Guy and Charles (Edna) Spivey, nephews, Ronnie, Larry, Marc and Tommy Spivey and special friend, Charlie Stewart. Surviving are nieces and nephews, Sandra Richardson (Donnie), Andy Spivey (Willa), Robin Gentry (Alton), and Carole Humphrey (Stephen); sister in law, Yvonne Spivey; nieces in law, Cathy Spivey and Patricia Spivey, and special friends, Nancy Sellers, Betty Spencer and Mayme Greer. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Thursday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with Rev. Elizabeth Polk officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends from 12:45 to 1:45 pm Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to Mt.
