Liberty Vardell Koontz

Rev. Liberty Vardell Koontz, 79, of Rockingham, passed away Monday, February 22, 2016 in Wilmington, Delaware. Rev. Koontz was born July 20, 1936 in Davidson County, NC, a son of the late Swada Liberty and Mildred Quillman Koontz. He had served his country in the US Army, worked with Richmond Steel, served as pastor of Oak Ridge Baptist Church and Saron Baptist Church and also as a prison chaplain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Staton Koontz and brothers, Franklin and Jerry Koontz. Surviving are his children, Kendal Koontz (Myra) of Frisco, TX, Denise Wilson (Steven) of Wilmington, DE; grandchildren, Megan, Kaitlyn and Ethan Koontz, Justin, Ryan and Lily Wilson and sister, Yvonne French of Nicholasville, KY. Funeral services will be at 11 am Friday at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Robby Caudle officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park. The family will see friends from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at 664 Richmond Road, Ext. Rockingham.
