Lawrence Wood

Lawrence McNeill Wood died Monday, June 1, 2009 at age 55 after a sudden illness in Pinehurst. Lawrence was born September 11, 1953 in Rockingham to Thomas Phillips Wood and Elizabeth Teague Wood. He lived in Southern Pines for the last twenty five years and was an avid painter, gardener, and golfer. Lawrence graduated from The Darlington School in Rome, GA and North Carolina State University. Later in life, he earned a Masters Gardener degree from Sandhills Community College. Lawrence owned a landscape design and maintenance firm in Moore County. Previously, he was associated with Wood Brothers, Inc, living both in New York, NY and Raleigh, NC. Lawrence was a well liked member of the Sanford, Rockingham, and Southern Pines communities and will be sadly missed by his many friends. He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Teague Williams of Sanford; brother, Thomas P. Wood, Jr. of Pinehurst and David T. Wood of Rockingham; stepbrothers, O. Temple Sloan of Raleigh, C. Hamilton Sloan of Morehead City, Craig Williams of Spartanburg, SC, and James K. Williams of Winston Salem. In addition, he is survived by his fiancée , Martha C Wicks of Southern Pines and her daughter, Samantha C. Garrison; nieces, Kate Wood Chapman, Marianne T. Wood, and nephew, T. Phillip Wood, III, all of Raleigh. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Rockingham at 2:00 pm Thursday, June 4th. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North Carolina State Wolfpack Club, PO Box 37100, Raleigh, NC 27627 or Sandhills Community College, 3395 Airport Rd., Pinehurst, NC 28374.
