Kay Beukema

Kathryn Schermerhorn Beukema, 87, of Pinehurst died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at home in the care of Richmond County Hospice. She was born to the late George F. and Edith Shermerhorn, January 22, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan. Kay was married to the late John Fredrick Beukema. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Wood. Kay is survived by son in law, Tom Wood of Pinehurst; three grandchildren, Phillip Wood, Kathryn Wood Chapman, and Marianne Wood; great grandchildren, Libby Wood and Kathryn Chapman all of Raleigh. Kay grew up in Michigan, and lived her adult life in Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, and California before returning to Pinehurst. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Kay loved helping people and spent time volunteering for meals on wheels. She also was an avid fan of all types of crossword puzzles. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Village Chapel, PO Box 1060, Pinehurst, NC 28370. There will be a memorial service at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2009 in the Tufts Memorial Garden at The Village Chapel, Pinehurst, NC.
