Mr. Johnny Owen Hughes, beloved father and friend, 53, of Rockingham passed away on July 7, 2009 due to complications in the Burn Unit of Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. Johnny was born September 21, 1955 to Charles and Martha Currie Hughes. He graduated from Richmond Senior High School and served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member on the Ledbetter United Methodist Church and a member of the church Men’s club. He was a member of the Rockingham Moose Lodge and had been a volunteer fireman with the Rockingham Fire Department. Johnny loved to fish, drive trucks and to help others. In addition to his father and mother, Charles and Martha Hughes of Rockingham, Johnny is survived by his wife Sharon Hughes of the home; a son, Jonathan Hughes and wife Carrie of Rockingham; a stepdaughter, Kristen Guinn and husband Chris and daughter Ava of Laurel Hill; three sisters, Barbara Ayer and husband Mike of Rockingham, Wanda Denise Watkins and husband Larry of Mt. Gilead and Kathy Helms and husband Jeff of Rockingham; nieces and nephews, Charles Michael Smith and friend Courtney, Charles Michael Smith II, Richard L. Smith and wife Iveta, Jaxson Smith, Kayley and Kristen Conrad, Chris and Jason Wilson, Heather and Maegan Helms, Cassie and Hailey Cox; and three special people, Judy and Josh Ayer and Jack Wilson. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Saturday, July 11th at Ledbetter United Methodist Church with Rev. Roger Thompson, Rev. Jimmy Tennant, and Rev. Russell Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond Memorial Park with military honors. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and other times at 927 E. Washington St. Ext., Rockingham. Memorials may be made to Ledbetter United Methodist Church, 476 Roberdel School Rd. Ext., Rockingham, NC 28379.
