Martha Adams Bostick Rushing, 90, of Hoffman, passed away Sunday, August 2,2009, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst following an extended illness. She was born October 15, 1918 in Scotland County, a daughter of the late Samuel and Mattie Newton Bostick. In addition to her parents, her husband, H. Brice Rushing; daughter, Mary Sue Rushing Johnson; granddaughter, Samantha Lynn White; her brothers, Sam, Bill, Jack, Buck and Cecil Bostick, all preceded her in death. Martha always did what she could to make a better place in life for those in need. It didn’t matter to her one’s background, race or religion. She would have given you the shirt off her back if you needed it. Martha visited the sick and the elderly because it gave her joy to be helping those who needed her help. She was widely loved by her many friends of all ages. She had an extended family that was brought together not by blood or marriage, but by the love and caring nature to help those who needed to be a part of a loving family. She was an active volunteer in both the Methodist and Baptist Church as well as in her community. She enjoyed quilting, needlework, working in her garden and nurturing her flowers. She was very knowledgeable on current events because she loved to read her daily newspapers and watch television news programs. Her family members were told by many that she was a very interesting person to talk to. Martha was a lifelong member of Hoffman United Methodist Church, where she served as church secretary, Sunday school teacher, treasurer, and pianist. She was an active member of the Ruth Deaton Home Demonstration Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also served on the Board of Education, as a tax registrar, and notary for many years. Even at the age of 90 she was highly active in politics and served as a judge for Beaver Dam District #1. She spent many years farming with her husband Brice, working at the Cotton Gin in Hoffman and was secretary at Hoffman School. Surviving are daughters, Mattie Rushing Watson and Nancy Bostick of the home; Lynda Bostick McMillan and husband John of Wagram; her brother, Richard Bostick and wife Grace of Hoffman; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jason and Joan Johnson, Madison, Brice and Garrett of Mint Hill; Michael and Brooke McMillan, Caitlin, Kyndall, and Grant of Wake Forest, Matthew McMillan of Laurinburg, Mark McMillan and Andrew of Asheboro, and Christy (McMillan) and Raymond Ragone, Domenick, and Rayna of Carolina Shores.
