Martha Crowson Hogan McInnis 96,of Ellerbe, died peacefully Wednesday, September 2nd, at Manor Care in Pinehurst, NC. Born in Wise, NC, April 28, 1913 to Rev. Kelly Wade and Lillian Little Hogan, she moved to Ellerbe in 1928 with her family. In 1932, she married Miles Lee McInnis and together they farmed until Lee’s death in 1983. Known to many as “Mama Mac” or “Aunt Martha”, she was the anchor of her extended family, nurturing, mothering, cooking, and hosting reunions and gatherings. She was an expert quilter and master homemaker, active in community organizations and singing in choral groups for many years. As a faithful member of Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, and was Historian for the Women of the Church. Martha treasured her faith, her family, her garden, and the home of 77 years into which she and Lee moved when they married. She was an inspiration to many, sharing her rich life experiences with both wisdom and her gentle wit. Her husband, Miles Lee McInnis, infant son Thomas Lee and daughter Mary Helen, brothers Kelly Wade Hogan Jr., James Alexander Hogan, and William Carey Hogan, and sisters Sudie Cox and Grace Hardy, preceded Martha in death. Surviving are sons James McInnis of Charlotte, and Wayne McInnis and wife Nedra of Ellerbe; daughters Lillian Covington and husband Clegg of Ellerbe, and Deana Vickers and husband Jon of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Ruth Keeney and husband David of Panama City, FL, Martha Webb of Ellerbe, Charles Webb of Atlanta, GA, Randy McInnis and wife Robin of Fort Mill, SC, Julie Wicker and husband Mark of Woodbridge, VA, Adam McInnis and wife Tammy of Rockingham; great grandchildren Hannah Webb, Will, Alex, and Olivia McInnis, and Toby McInnis; step-grandchildren Nicole Vickers-Hymowitz and Tiffany Vickers; step great-grandchildren Chris and Jake Keeney, Tabitha Reeves, and Samantha, Nikolas, and Charlotte Vickers-Hymowitz; sister Ruby Bullard of Kernersville, and a dedicated and loving friend, Jenelle Thompson, who was her caregiver in Martha’s declining years. Her many nieces and nephews considered her a loving second mother, nurturing friend and trusted counselor. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 5, at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will see friends from 6:00pm till 8:00pm, Friday evening, September 4th, at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the home of Wayne and Nedra McInnis, 1109 Clayton Carriker Rd, Ellerbe.
