Bennie Sue Mathis Stirk, 86, of 121 Hollywood Lane, Rockingham, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, April 12, 2017. She went peacefully, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Stirk was born November 21, 1930, in Jackson County, NC, a daughter of the late James W. and Chassie Deitz Mathis. She retired as a secretary with Burlington Industries. Along with her husband, Rev. Douglas Stirk, they served Second Baptist Church, Bennettsville, SC, Roberdel Baptist Church, where they were instrumental in building a portion of the church, Wallace Baptist Church, Wallace, SC and Cobb Memorial Baptist Church in Rockingham. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday at Cordova Baptist Church with Rev. Douglas Anderson and Rev. A. B. Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park. Mrs. Stirk is survived by daughters, Dawn Stirk Cockman of Wilmington, and Lucinda Ann Stirk of Rockingham; daughter-in-law, Betty Sowders Stirk of Rockingham; grandchildren, Michael Daniel Stirk, Christopher Scott Stirk, Virginia Pittman Cagle and husband Alan, Haylea Cockman Martin and husband Joseph, Cindy McRae Stirk; great-grandchildren, Hunter Stirk, Ella and Tatum Martin, Katherine and Owen Cagle, Chassidy Mixon; sister Helen Mathis King and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Douglas Jennings Stirk, sons, Rev. Michael Douglas Stirk and Donald Ray “Donnie” Stirk. The family will see friends from 1:00 – 1:45 pm Saturday at Cordova Baptist Church and at other times at the home.
