Edward Lamar Dewitt

Edward Lamar Dewitt, 76, of Ellerbe, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Edward was born March 9, 1941 in Horry County, SC, a son of the late John Gary and Ada Pusser Dewitt. For many years he was supervisor of North State Orchards and other farms of Consolidated Agriculture Industries, stretching from North Carolina to Florida. He loved growing peaches, vegetables, seeing hay grow and raising cattle from the bottle up. He has served as NC Peach Chairman, NC Cattleman’s Association Chairman, past board chairman of Richmond Academy, member of Farm Bureau and in 2013 was the Grand Marshall of the Farm-City Week Farmer’s Parade. On the weekends for many years, NASCAR was an important part of his life. He was in charge of operations and communications for the Benny Parsons Race Team (L.G.Dewitt Racing). He was also a member of Elberta Masonic Lodge #654, A.F.&A.M.. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John, David, Phillip, Harry & Larry. Surviving are his children, Julia Dewitt of Ellerbe, Dale Dewitt (Melanie) of Ellerbe; grandchildren, Jonathan and Savannah Dewitt of Ellerbe; brother, Steve Dewitt (companion, Hazel Perrell) of Lexington, NC; sisters, Anne Lomax (Raymond) of Jackson Springs, Jeanette Carr (Hap) of Clemson, SC; sisters-in-law, Mabel, Susan and Jean Dewitt; special friend, Susanne McInnis and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Saturday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe with Rev. Dena White and Rev. Wayne Luck officiating. Interment will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery. The family will see friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the Lomax Home, 826 Sycamore Lane, Jackson Springs. Memorials may be made to Derby Volunteer Fire Department, Mt. Creek Volunteer Fire Department or to Jones Springs United Methodist Church.
