Robert Malcolm Smith, 90, of Rockingham, passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Brookdale Pinehurst. Mr. Smith was born September 23, 1926 in Wayne County, a son of the late Thad and Laura Smith. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Rockingham where he was a member of the Baraca Sunday School Class and had been an usher and greeter. He served his country in the US Army during World War II. He was a former umpire for high school and some college baseball. In addition, he refereed high school basketball. For over 36 years he was employed as Gasoline and Oil Inspector with the Standards Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, where he trained over 23 inspectors and wrote the training manual for the State of North Carolina. As owner of Smith Auction Company, he volunteered as the auctioneer for the Hoffman United Methodist Church Annual Auction for over 35 years. Following his retirement, he was associated with Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham for over 25 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Carlton Smith, Waldo Smith and Donald Smith. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Nora J. “Saints” Smith; children, Dianne Smith Iseman (Jim) and Mickey Smith (Susanna); grandchildren, Rhett Iseman Trull (Jeff), Jim Iseman, III, and Kathryn Lowe; great grandchildren, Audrey Trull and Cordelia Trull and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11am Saturday at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Jim Nelson and Rev. Patricia Greene officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Eastside Cemetery. The family will see friends from 5 to 8 pm Friday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham.
